CHAPTER
TWELVE - LISTENING TO INNER VOICE. Dvaa suparnaa sayujaa sakhaayaa samaanam brkshyam parisasvajaate ! Tayoh anyah pippalam svaadu atti anya anasnan abhicaakashiti |
Justam yadaa pasyati anyam isham asya mahimaanam iti pasyati vitashokah | Sitting on the same tree the jiva (individual human self) by his ignorance of divinity (anishayaa) gets absorbed and feels miserable. But when sees the adorable (justam) divinity of the other bird , he realizes his own greatness and relieved from misery. (Svetasvatara Upanishad) So we are all in the hands of two levels of self realisation within us. Two entities- an ego self and a superior self - who are both responsible for all our actions herein now and by virtue of the same actions shape our destiny of the future. Sri Aurobindo in his essay "The difficulties of the mental Being" gives some explanations of these two entities of our existence. According to him in two different planes we have this spiritual being which is superior and divine and also the mental being which is inferior and human. He explains the difference between the two in his own words and I quote " The divine is inalienable self-bliss and inviolable all-bliss; the human is sensation of mind and body seeking for delight, but finding only pleasure, indifference and pain.." unquote. This concept thus explains very well why we have misfortune or good fortune. If the inferior base self of ours guides our actions, then most likely we shall face misfortune i.e a bad destiny and on the other hand if the superior self guides our actions good destiny shall be our lot. Nobody likes misfortune and every one craves for good fortune. Given this situation, it is only but natural for every one, every intelligent person, to ask how do I listen to this voice and guidance of the superior self and shape for himself a better future? It is indeed a very difficult and profound question. In one sense it encompasses the entire yoga sadhana. Because once you become tuned with the superior self you are in Bramhan all the time. But what we are discussing now is that, in our day today worldly busy life, can I hope for this communication. It is by all means not easy. Sri Aurobindo himself states as many others have also stated, "Between the two there are for the human being a veil and a lid which prevent the human not only from attaining but even from knowing the divine." |
