CHAPTER TWELVE - LISTENING TO INNER VOICE.

"Based on lectures by Sri Bimal Mohanty"

All these have one purpose behind them- to act as a constant reminder of God's presence always.

The effectiveness of cultivating this attitude of being in the proximity of God and remain conscious of his presence is so potent that man has gone to all extents to build reminders as an integral part of living. It is both internally as well as externally. We see people wear chita and chandan (virmillion and sandalwood paste etc) on their forehead and body. Sadhaks wear fire coloured garments. You have this practice of Japamala or rosary in the hands of people counting each bead remembering God. You do not undertake any new activity till you first remember God.

What effect do all these have on our mind? It is all to build up constant awareness of God's presence around us. We are never alone. God is all the time near us. All these seem to shout out this truth constantly. Remember Him, remember Him, remember Him. As Sri Shankaracarya would say Bhaja Govindam, Bhaja Govindam, Bhaja Govindam. That seems to be the purpose. The practical rationality of our behaviour.

What happens once we have this awareness? All our activities, our thinking, our working all get influenced automatically. The superior force simply takes charge and gives directions. Since this superior force is benevolent, omni potent, omniscient - sarvajnata, sarvakshama, sarvavyapta and kalyanamaya, then as long as we voluntarily agree to remain under its influence only good can happen to us. One does not have to make efforts to listen to the inner voice, the voice of the superior self. One has to only accept the presence, get tuned to it and then the music automatically follows with perfect harmony. It is simply a happening without further effort.

So the seed advice -the bijamantra - is to cultivate simply a conscious state that you are in his very close proximity. You are touching, , smelling, listening, thinking, talking to him all the time. That is how we allow the divinity to enter into us to work within us. Everything changes thereafter by a very logical sequence.

Let me repeat what I said earlier:

You do not have to make an effort to listen to the inner voice. The inner voice makes itself audible to us. That bhajan bears repeatation. As you entered into me, you lit up my entire being. I glowed like a lantern. All the darkness around me vanished. I was lost and now I see my way by the light that is you within me.
