CHAPTER FOURTEEN - ON MEDITATION - Part 2

The Benefits of Meditation - on the body and vital breath.

Continued from Chapter thirteen which dealt with Object of meditation.

"Based on lectures by Sri Bimal Mohanty"

Before we go into the question of how meditation brings benefits to us, let us try to see what really happens during meditation.

Meditation begins being inward looking (antarmukhi) before it expands to encompass all and becomes outward looking (vishwamukhi). Meditation is the process by which Self dwells gathered in itself, by which it manifests and possesses its manifestation. Concentration is the means by which the individual soul identifies itself. In other words, The Self which has manifested as the Jiva, takes possession of the Jiva and the Jiva in its turn, recognizes this fact and identifies itself with the Supreme Self.

So the first thing that happens in meditation is the process of enlivening of the self within. When the self comes in focus, the realization of its immense power, so far hidden and untapped , becomes apparent if not released and manifested as yet, but most definitely understood as concentration grows more and more.

So what benefits accrue to the practitioner?

The first recipient of the benefits of meditation is our body - this physical body itself.

  How does it happen?

As the meditation grows itself in the awareness of the self, centering around the self, the mind dwells on the self. We call it Swastha or established in self . (swa =self and stha = established). The first result is a sense of physical well-being. Swastha in common parlance means physical well-being. That is why when you venture into the right prakriyas or steps of astangaYoga - the eightfold Yoga, there is a sudden improvement in the physical body- the body being the first recipient. Any one can check it for himself.
